An SUV ploughed into farmers protesting the farm laws in Lakhimpur Kheri, UP. The vehicle was tied to the convoy of the family of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni, and his son Ashish Mishra was named prime accused.

Minister kept post and re-nominated

With an FIR naming the minister's son, the Prime Minister still did not ask Ajay Mishra to go, and he stayed on in the Home Ministry, only to be re-nominated by the BJP for the 2024 election. It took the Supreme Court to get the accused arrested and his bail cancelled. Power closed ranks around its own.

Ashish Mishra's role is before the courts. The accountability failure is that the minister paid no political price while the case ran.

What accountability should have looked like

Step a minister aside pending a credible probe when his family is accused of killing protesters. That is the floor of ministerial responsibility.

Ministers and office-holders responsible

Naming who held the portfolio is a matter of public record. It is not by itself a finding of personal responsibility for any death or any rupee.
