What happened

A 19-year-old Dalit woman died after an alleged gang rape in Hathras, UP. Police cremated her body in the dead of night, without her family present or willing, and officials at first disputed that a rape had occurred.

A forced night cremation and an official denial are the marks of a cover-up, not a reckoning. Journalists heading to report the case were arrested. No senior figure in the state government answered for any of it.

Dignity and consent for the family, an independent investigation, and consequences for officials who burned a body in secret.
