What happened

On Independence Day 2022, the Gujarat government granted remission to 11 men serving life for the 2002 gang rape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven of her family, including a three-year-old. The freed men were garlanded.

Remission quashed by Supreme Court

The remission panel reportedly included ruling-party office-bearers, and the release cut against a 2014 central policy barring remission for rape and murder. In 2024 the Supreme Court quashed it, finding Gujarat had usurped jurisdiction and acted in tandem with the convicts. A court, not a conscience, restored the sentence.

What accountability should have looked like

No early release for gang rape and murder, no political hands on remission panels, and respect for the survivor's right to be heard.
