What happened

Media reports in June 2026 alleged that firms and family members linked to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had acquired around 137 land parcels, roughly 168 acres, in and around Ujjain, concentrated in areas expected to rise in value from planned government infrastructure and development.

Whatever the truth of the purchases, the accountability question is what followed. The Chief Minister's office flatly denied that he or his wife had bought any land since he took office and called the reports misleading; the opposition demanded a judicial inquiry overseen by a sitting Supreme Court judge; and the government ordered no independent probe at all. A serious public allegation that office may have been used to gain from insider land values was met with a denial and a press line, not with the transparent, independent scrutiny that alone could clear it or prove it.
