What happened

Top wrestlers, including Olympic medallists, sat in at Jantar Mantar accusing the Wrestling Federation chief and six-time BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing female athletes.

Accusers policed, accused protected

Police registered cases only after the Supreme Court intervened. As the new Parliament was inaugurated, the protesting wrestlers were detained, dragged away and later booked. The accused MP was never arrested. The state policed the accusers and protected the accused, and the Prime Minister said nothing.

Contested / alleged

The harassment allegations are before the courts. The accountability failure is the delay in registering cases and the policing of the complainants.

What accountability should have looked like

Prompt, unbiased investigation of complaints against the powerful, protection for complainants, and no shielding of an accused because he holds a party seat.

Ministers and office-holders responsible

Naming who held the portfolio is a matter of public record. It is not by itself a finding of personal responsibility for any death or any rupee.
