What happened

India completed a nationwide switch to 20 percent ethanol-blended petrol six years ahead of target, making E20 effectively the only fuel at pumps, with no unblended option and no price difference.

Owners of older vehicles never designed for E20 report falling mileage, corrosion and repair costs, yet were given no choice, no labelling and no compensation. The government's answer was that the fuel is safe, and the Supreme Court declined to step in, so consumers were left to swallow a cost the state imposed on them.

What accountability should have looked like

Offer a labelled, unblended choice at the pump as the US and EU do, and compensate or grandfather owners of vehicles never built for E20.
