What happened

Three laws to deregulate farm markets were passed by a contested voice vote amid uproar, with no real consultation of the states (agriculture is largely a state subject) or of farmers.

The government said the laws would have let farmers sell anywhere and drawn in investment.

Reversed after a year of protest

Farmers protested for a year over fears for assured procurement, and hundreds died at the protest sites. The government finally repealed all three laws, then framed the retreat as a failure to explain the reform, never as an error of substance or process, and was slow even to acknowledge the dead.

Contested / alleged

Farm unions alleged the laws favoured large agri-corporates, a contested political allegation; the repeal followed the protests, not any adjudicated finding.

What accountability should have looked like

Legislate farm reform with the states and farmers at the table, put MSP on firmer footing, and pilot changes that can be tested and trusted.

Ministers and office-holders responsible
